thanks for the props - we are nearly there re: 15% according to Forrester I think "In 2008, 12% (7.4million)* of all mobile phone users in the UK use mobile internet services."
I dont think you need an iphone experience to find using the mobile web usable - I have an N95 and it works great for bloglines, google, general browsing. My girlfriend happily logs into facebook mobile on her LG. @James - ah, but you and your girlfriend are probably fairly experienced adopters I'm guessing.
The reason the iPhone has taken off so well - and I think its something the mobile gurus don't "get" because they have already passed this level of skill - is that its easy and fun to use for a relative tyro. very good point! Got me thinking... It's one thing to shove the web onto mobile through transcoding, zooming, whatever (etc) but mobile-specific web apps/widgets and sites designed for mobile (ie. 2 & 7) are surely what will drive the uptake of mobile web (in the affluent world). That's where services like mFacebook, mTwitter, mMyspace, etc are curently leading the way (and, cough, Blackberry for email).
I agree with whatleydude's rantanalysis anyhow - who in the normal world uses the phrase "mobile web"?? It's "can you get the internet / Facebook on your phone?" His rantings are to be found on the blog for the Mobile Web 2.0 Summit - lots of really great stuff in there: http://moblog.co.uk/blogs.php?show=18487 Thanks for the write-up!
So which of my "top 11" trends don't you agree with? Dan, the things I see mobile having trouble with are:
(i) Mobile search - the device struggles to cope with poor results a la Google (ii) Location - its been talked about for years, but every time we looked at it it was uneconomical - as far as I can see the economics are still not there for anything but high value usage. (iii) 2D barcodes - I think its a supply chain / lifestyle thing in the East, I'm not sure its transferable - it too has been around awhile but not taken off (I must point out I'm being Eurocentric, you were probably being global). RFID / M2M is coming, but I don't think its at a low enough price point yet. The other trend I can see is the "$5 phone" and I think that will make some big differences. |
