Ah... I'd been looking at it with my marketing/product management hat on...
Being 'in on the beta' used to be an exclusive thing. Lots of services 'in beta' were actually really released (although you could argue some are alpha quality!!!). It was a way of getting 'buy in' from users/customers. Being in on the Beta is no longer 'exclusive' feeling, hence 'private beta'... Recreating that ever needed sense of exclusivity and belonging required for web 2.0 and social apps...
Its an interesting dynamic, because that excludes more people than it includes. I for one find it annoying, and I suspect I'm not alone - so in a world of multiple competitors that strategy has quite a few risks.
Ah, but that is exactly the point - you want to exclude more than you include, because you (they) are after the early adopters and all that goes with that... Welcome to Marketing 2.0
