Nice review Alan. I think there is something in next gen search, but it doesn't sound like these guys have found it.
Nice Post Alan. Actually the black front page may do well for them if they take off. Good contrast to the whiteness of Google.
Cuil is ok. Not as amazing as hyped up. I did a bit more research and wrote about it today on the blog, shortly after discovering it. They seem to over index and under deliver. I'm sure it'll improve in time. $33 million in funding, with ex Google employees and a great concept. But will it kill Google? lol... i v much doubt it!! Vince (Hong Kong Wong) BTW I also just wrote further thoughts on Cuil and some facts about the company here on my blog if interested: http://hongkongwong.com/2008/07/the-cuil-google-killer-cuilcom/
CUIL IS NOT COOL! One of the SLOWEST loading search engines I have ever used... wasting my time...back to GOOGLE which is cool!
And.. Cuil is not able to find itself!
I searched for Cuil on Cuil, and got un-related stuff
Not impressed as yet. Nice front end but "black" is so yesterday - doesn't Google offer Google Dark!?
The layout is ok, but my God, the speed is quite apppallingly slow!! A simple search on "google dark" made the two search engines' processing capacity wildly apparent! And what about the so-called "Preferences" option on Cuil? All TWO of them. I welcome any challenge to the Google Empire, but Cuil just doesn't cut it for me.
I was interested in all the talk about Cuil, so I checked it out, fully ready to give it a good review if it was any good itself. Unfortunately, I was NOT impressed in the least. I searched for 10 fairly well-known sites and didn't come up with ANYTHING> For supposedly having a larger index, that's pathetic. Sorry Cuil, google is actually useful for me.
I was not too impressed -- searched for myself and colleagues -- none of our LinkedIn pages, blogs, or professional mentions (such as pub med absctracts or citations) came up at all, not even several pages in. The thumbnails are unpredictable at best and are sometimes just a random jpeg or gif from the site, such as a banner element or menu. I searched for my company name and a few other things -- it showed up, but then a lot of random and unrelated stuff showed up also. The layout is ok, but not as quick to surf through as Google's.
What really annoyed me, though, was when I searched for another company (start up) that I am involved with. Although it popped up first, the associated picture was something totally different and not even from our site. Nothing else related to our company popped up even though we've been in the news a lot.
Yes, I got the same result looking at the Tuatha de Danann - the Faerie people reduced to Planet of The Apes indeed!
Y'all seemed to have major performance problems - I was lookig at it this morning UK time and it was fine, so I guess there were fewer people hitting it.
Cuil certainly not ready for prime-time. With all the press, one would think that they would have QE'd this and someone would have pull the plug on the press for now. I searched 'mac' and received the 'no results found' page. Later entered 'japanese' and had received the same 'no results page'. After returning to Cuil a little later, I entered the two words and finally received results. The slow speed is another shortfall. I'm sure these bugs can and will be worked out, but the fact is that this product is not ready for the plublicity that it is receiving. Someone failed to make a good product or quality decission by letting this product roll to the public. This isn't even 'beta' ready.
Cuil is totally crap. Search is bad and over that it is too slow. Would not suggest anyone to use Cuil infact yahoo, msn giver much better results that Cuil. In short Cuil is totally useless.
Waste of time 9 trimes out of ten. Hoping for something more, specially in china. Seems case sensitive, and comes up with load of crap anyway or more often cannot find. Needs a fuck lot work. Stop wasting my time
Searched for my company domain and nothing showed up. Searched for some of my competitors domains, some displayed, some didn't. Wow! They need to work on this. It's bad when an actual domain typed in doesn't appear.
