Now you know I am going to comment here.
Open source is not democratic. Its meritocratic. The ability to Fork or run different agendas to the same code or point of view makes direction ( not neccesarily leadershp ) a hard thing in OSS. OSS is desperately in need of Leaders and Front men which s why the community throws up the Torvalds, the Stallmans , the Perens and the Shuttleworths to whom many will bow to opinions. Yet further down the OSS Chanin it breaks into cliques, subcommittees, planning debacles and outright shouting matches. Your spot on about the Elitism of Utopian idealism. Usually led by people whose very own day jobs are within the arenas they promote as wrong doing. I guess I should blog this position if only to continue to point out that OSS needs to embrace the likes of Adobe if only to make relationships and channels of communication before other competitors close them out!
I have been arguing for a long time about how open source fits the ideas of a capitalistic society. In fact, I even made a post in this regard couple of years back
