Thanks for the shout out. When I think of an MBA crossed with an MFA, I picture David Armano: http://linkedin.com/in/darmano Creative thinking combined with astute business sense generates effective solutions to challenges we sometimes don't even realize we're facing.
Dan Pink's book about the rise of the right brain is one of the reasons I quit working for a large and extremely corporate IT consultancy. It was time to stop thinking like an automaton and speaking in riddles, and start sharing a desk with a couple of graphic designers and an film shoot director.
Best decision I made in years.
I'm biased, but these four points are great. My MFA was about building confidence in my own artistic inquiry; it builds extreme reflectivity and discipline.
One thing it will also teach you is that some people just aren't talented (or they may have talent somewhere else). There's no hiding in art; it's plain to see if you suck. It may seem ironic, but that kind of objective ruthlessness is missing from many firms. And if you think I'm kidding about the objectivity in art, well...you clearly haven't been to art school. @Ethan while I hear what you say, I know of more than one fine art competition won by a 3 year old, chimp, computer or somesuch.
LOL!
Yeah, visual art as a medium has been in a state of paralysis for decades. I guess I was speaking more directly to legitimate music, since that's what I know To be fair, I'd submit that many MBA's don't hold a candle to a 3-year-old, a chimp, or a computer in many straightforward tasks. To me, the lesson is: talent is rare, and it's valuable to find ways to expose who has it (and who doesn't). |
