There isn't a hope in hell of getting people online in time for the olympics unless investment in fibre for the last mile is made. Most people I talk to would love to be online but it just doesn't work for anyone living more than a couple of miles from an exchange. I would shut down the quangos too. All we need is ministers talking to the grassroots and that is free. More nurses, more teachers, more investment in infrastructure will make the the network work and people will digitally engage and give government the feedback they need to run the country. It will come. Our job is to make it happen asap before UKplc is left in the slowlane of the global village and economy.
It is good to summarise the numbers, and these are compelling.
The cost savings are so great, be it delivery of assisted care, education, the need to reduce travel, plus all the other itemised benefits that this financially is a no brainer for the state to invest more, while ensuring regulation pushes a bits economy and not one based on call conveyance. It is probably right to be cynical but this objectuve is there for the taking. This is not re-wire britain project, it is a connect up anyway you can. Re-wiring is a separate project, as is getting rural areas the connectivity they need. The poor mail serice has been enough to force a few of my neighbours to dust down old pcs and start emailing using their neigbbours connections. Now there are IMing each other. The projecct is overdue. |
