It's the "Be careful what you wish for strategy", i.e. grant a moronic wish simply to prevent the industry using the govts' refusal to grant it as leverage. Labour's going out anyway, so no worries there. Plus, Mandelson gets good favour anyway. Nothing to lose.
Before the people can recognise why copyright is unethical they have to have their noses rubbed into it. That means it's no good a few cognoscenti pointing out how stupid this all is, society has to go through the pain of carrying the anachronism of copyright to its inhumane and iniquitous conclusion. Bankrupting families at random? Yup. Done that. What's next? Disconnecting large numbers of families at random? After that? Councils raiding people's homes to seize equipment used for file-sharing and their ill gotten assets? Who would want despicable IP thieves living in their posh neighbourhood eh? Send them off to labour camps for rehabilitation. And those who incite domestic extremism by suggesting that file-sharing should be legalised? Oh dear. Continuous sedation and full frontal lobotomy might work. |
