so the social web fails as a space for hambermasian dialogue.
and social media types are inward looking neo-narcissists. surprise. my experience of social media & #flotilla was; - watching the livestream from one of the ships the night before made the whole affair a lot more personal (the digital mediation of empathy?) - while on a bank holiday day trip to brighton i spotted a tweet about a demo at the local war memorial http://twitter.com/MrsPBoutique/status/15120774608 - hopping out of pizza express, i made it in time to report on the demo & spontaneous march http://twitter.com/danmcquillan/status/15121747611 http://twitter.com/danmcquillan/status/15122111325 fwiw i don't think you can look at the digital side alone- it's impact intertwines with offline social currents dan
apparently it was no big deal in the states, a footnote at the end of news reports.
they blame al qaeda... no mention of WMDs yet. http://www.lemonde.fr/proche-orient/article/2010/05/31/aux-etats-unis-l-assaut-israelien-relegue-en-fin-de-journal_1365794_3218.html#ens_id=1228030 (in french) my wife is on a tour of israel at the moment and it seems tourists there are living in their happy bubble, blissfully unaware of what is going on. spooky. can't imagine the green avatar revolution happening this time, anyway yes, big fail for the "social media can change the world" crap, it just mirrors traditional media with added personal color. |
