Naturally the concept of a federated or transportable identity have been around for some time. An increasing number of simple web 1.0 e-commerce transactions require you to have an identity on multiple systems (e.g. purchasing a holiday requires a purchase from an airline, a car rental, a hotel etc).
The question in the consumers mind is often who do I trust with my identity data I recently signed up for to a social networking site and it invited me to use my login for another site to register with this new site. Given that I had no track record with the new site - they had not yet built any trust with me - I was reluctant to let the new site "see my data" from the old site. A great idea if we can transport our login and personal profile data from one site to another - but those sites will need to understand how we consumers perceive and trust them. Simple questions such as "I ticked the allow marketing emails box on Sites A - does this mean I will be spammed by Site B" need to be addressed as well as the higher conceptual level of "trust" in the provider by user. |
