Hm, interesting analogy... I am not sure I am 'flirting' with any new social network - for start I have never felt part of any for real. I usually participate to test them and see what the fuss is about.
I have been blogging since 2001 and talking about network theory to anyone who'd listen since about 2003. Finally, VRM is starting to join the dots that I have first seen when reading Cluetrain. Oh yeah, I am one of Doc's acolytes. My position has always been that the original 'social network' has been the blogosphere. Most of the buzz around Facebook, MySpace etc is of academic interest in case it discloses something about the social and/or about networks that I shouldn't ignore. But I agree that "This will come to pass...". At least I hope so as I wish for open net with silos that don't stick.
Hi Adriana...yes, I'm also a fan of "open" though as I'm a Web 0.0 Old Lag, the Open TextNet was my first social net experience (listservers etc), but it all gets richer as bandwidth goes up and cost of production comes down.
I've been tracking VRM awhile, I think what Doc Searls is doing is addressing a bigger solution space than "VRM" per se, but that is another discussion entirely
Re VRM and Doc you are spot on. VRM is a rather unfortunate acronym, which works for as many reasons as it doesn't.
Personally, I find myself working more and more with ubergeeks of 20 years ago - they haven't lost the track and know what they are doing. Unlike most of the social media/network crowd.
Agree re VRM - we should compare notes on the VRM space sometime methinks.
Re oldgeeks - hope for us then |

...maybe the kids will take notice. Danah Boyd called it about right on Facebook. She raises the same issues we have been raising over the last few months. I am utterly confused by the ways in which the tech industry fetishizes Facebook. There's no dou
