Some sites are like Slinky Springs. Fun on Christmas Day, back in the box by New Year.
Others are more like footballs. You play with them like crazy over Christmas, then even though your usage drops, you still keep using it pretty regularly. It'll be interesting to see which one Facebook turns out to be.
IMHO People are getting through their initial discovery phase and settling down to long term sustainable behaviour. IMHO the power of the social graph will find lots of useful applications that keep people coming back, although maybe not 1,000 page views per month. Just like Oli's football.

My mental model is more an expanding wave from a centre point - the outer edge of the wave is marked by a high level of activity Facesurfing? There's probably a simple maths expression we could use to predict the theoretical decline as the waveform moves outwards (area v circumference?) and then test v actual. |
