I agree that the dawn of cloud computing is a step change and thus could take the mantle of web 3.0
What is interesting is seeing companies like Rightscale already appearing as services on top of this new infrastructure. The question(s) I have been considering are: 1. Is the cloud database going to allow realtime analytical processing or will we still need to rely on OLAP tools. If so where are the players like Microstrategy, BI and IBM. 2. What is Websphere and IBM going to do in this space? Giventhey were the kings of the mainframe era. i.e the cloud is just open manged mainframes. 3. Will the UI be RESTful for SimpleDB, Bigtable etc and will that mean we no longer need SQL Sytax and table joins? 4. What is the data scalability and latency of information PUT, DELETE and GET plus Query (GDATA). So will Web 4.0 be about DataMining with a semantic twist?
Sa,. good questions all - some answers:
1. I think it will be a transition from now to RTP nirvana (if that ever occurs 100%) 2/3. The PaaS needs a lot more than just a simple REST platform - all that other stuff that Websphere etc have been using in closed EINs will also be required, plus (prob) more powerful OSS 4. Scacalability & Latency - and reliability - will imho not be good enough to preclude on-site servers and thick clients for quite a while. Web 2.0 is already about Data Mining, but its been semantically twisted into words like Beacon ![]() |
