Well, there is Web 2.0 companies and there is Web 2.0, the original meaning of it has to be more with users than companies. Web 2.0 is also platform/web services oriented and in a distributed networked environment that is hard to monetise.
I have always criticised Web 2.0 biz models, if there are any and subscribe to the view that the 'commercial' Web of 2008 is a house built on sand - advertising and user data mining. That doesn't mean that what O'Reilly described as Web 2.0 (and I am as fed up with the term as the next social media guru) has no validity. A few analytical distinctions never come amiss. ![]()
@Jof - tsk, such cynicism in one so young
![]() @ Adriana - that's "are" Web 2.0 companies (these pedants are revolting ![]() My overall tenet is the same as yours - ie the underlying "Web 2.0" will roll on, though "Web 2.0 The Biz Model" is overhyped. By the way, I do note with wry amusement how the O'Reilly emphasis on what exactly Web 2.0 has shifted over the years.
Alan,
We will never notice 'crash 2.0' in a way that crash '1.0' led to an economic downturn. If venture funds have been gullible in investing in 'businesses that aren't really businesses' - which seems to have happened a lot - and they lose their money, then what difference will that make to you and I? I certainly haven't ever had enough capital to invest it in a venture fund. The best 2.0 startups are bootstrapped - last.fm and flickr being good examples. (And that's why they both got bought, I guess) |
