At first, it seems I do fit in that bottom box, but then again - I do try out new services and apps and continue to use them (yes, even FriendFeed) far more than the rest of the population does. I don't think I fit into the ambiently intimate either - because that's still just a type of observer, not participant. And I use FF and Twitter, but not to the point of obsession. If anything, I think I just constantly straddle this chasm: http://www.25hoursaday.com/weblog/2008/05/21/NoteToWeb20CompaniesEarlyAdoptersAreNotTheMassMarket.aspx
between the early adopters and the pragmatists. @ Sarah - I count myself as a laggardly early adopter
Like you I use the stuff, but its a means to an end, not an end in itself. I think a lot of this stuff though is still in the "mini chasm" between the innovators and the early adopters, and I am always curious about what dynamics drive the takeup of service A rather than B (predicting this is part of our livelihood) so understanding usage nuances is always interesting ! Thanks for the heads up that the blog was having problems. There wasn't sufficient link love to have caused it so it must have been something up with the host.
As far as the chart goes, I have been bordering on the Frenzied FriendFeeders but am trying to reign in my online behaviour and become more of a dipper than an immerser. I think the early adopter crowd need to take a step back and think about things as a 'normal' user would. |
