It is no doubt good to see Tim O'Reilly realizing that web 2.0 should finally start providing real value. But my question is: if people actually want to be entertained and are ready to pay for it (by watching ads or paying for yet another music app), developers will continue to meet this demand with adequate supply.
I'll be looking forward to what you have to say at the Berlin conference).

If people are paying / being advertised to I have no worries, my point is more that there is a finite limit to the amount of money available from advertising. Where people are not paying ie the service is free but supported by investor money or subsidy from elsewhere - ie the "true" economics of production are disrupted - then you have the issue of Adverse Selection, where lower quality drives out higher.
Absolutely true, there is a limit to the amount of money that advertisers spend to finance startups and this is exactly why we see so many startups closing their doors after a few months of operation making nothing off ads.
@ Svetlana - I suspect they close because there is actually too little money in Ads (I can't see how even Facebook's Ad CPM makes breakeven money), and they run out of initial subsidies.
