Twitter only went down for 3 hours and was flakey for a bit after. Given the history of the thing it's not that strange. What'll be interesting is if/when it goes down for a number of days. There's something wrong-feeling about a service that aims to be an essential part of the Internet running of a centralised database. Are current business models not compatible with the robust distributed infrastructure thing? Whatever, I'm sure we'll all survive a proper Twitpocalypse but it'll be fascinating to watch all the same.
Hm, you may be throwing the baby with the bathwater - and in this case Ashton Kutcher would be the bathwater! - one of your snark attacks.
![]() DDOS attacks on Twitter (and Facebook, YouTube and other web services which were less noticed, perhaps due to their more mature and geographically distributed infrastructure) is bad news and shouldn't be dismised. a) another reminder - as if we needed it any! - that we carry out our world-transforming communication frenzy within silos in which we don't have much say. And even our own pearls of wisdom don't belong to us. b)more importantly, Twitter (and others) got caught in the cross fire of cyberwar between Russia and Georgia. Well, if that's not interesting and noteworthy, I don't know what it is?!
I hang my head in shame - while I was playing bath snarks I was ignoring the major issue (as you guys have pointed out!)
In my defence, all I can say is it would have been an "I told you so" if I had written anything about that, which is even worse ![]() |
